Staff

Pastor Buddy Burgess

Buddy Burgess grew up in Boiling Springs, South Carolina, studied at Spartanburg Methodist College, and graduated from Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina before completing his degree at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, with additional study at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

His ministry has taken him across the Southeast. He pastored Davis Grove Baptist Church in Snow Hill, North Carolina, then served as minister of youth and recreation at Forest Hills Baptist Church in Wilson. He was minister with the deaf at First Baptist Church in Memphis, then chaplain at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind in Talladega through the Southern Baptist North American Mission Board. In 1985 he developed the American Sign Language program at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, and taught there as an adjunct professor for three years. He retired in 2015 as pastor of the Deaf Mission at Richmond’s First Baptist Church, where he had ministered since 1998 — later also leading its Recreation and Sports Ministry.

Over the years, Buddy has preached and taught seminars in sixteen states and four countries. He has coached high school football, basketball, and softball, and served in Little League baseball and softball as both coach and officer. He remains active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, having served on the board of directors of its Virginia Capital Region.

When he’s not at church, you’ll usually find Buddy watching a game — he’s a Richmond Flying Squirrels fan and follows local professional, college, and high school teams. He and his wife Anne, originally from Wilson, North Carolina, have two married children and ten grandchildren.
